Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Niddrie lawn

  • Measure the gate. A push mower is the only thing that fits through less than 70 cm; a standard machine wants 70-95 cm.
  • Low ground near the Steele Creek wetlands: mention it if the back lawn holds water.
  • Photograph the strip as well as the lawn. Moonee Valley's 200 mm rule is measured there too.

Niddrie lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Niddrie?+

A single cut of 180 m² of Niddrie lawn runs $105-$150 in the model. The bid rests on your own block's aerial; a corner lot with a long strip quotes above it.

Is the Niddrie nature strip my job or council's?+

Yours. Moonee Valley requires owners to keep the property, strip included, free of long grass, with a 200 mm limit on grass and weeds; council inspects before summer, and its clearing costs can be recovered from the owner. It plants and prunes the street trees itself and residents may not add trees to a strip.

Will a mower cut a lawn that backs onto the Steele Creek reserve?+

Yes, and the useful thing to add is what the rear boundary is. An open fence to the creek reserve means an edge to trim along the park side and leaf blown in from the wetland end. A solid fence means a normal back lawn.

About Niddrie

Thomas Napier took up the land between 1843 and 1851 and sold it to Stevenson in 1869. Doutta Galla primary opened in 1953. A technical school followed in 1959 and became Rosehill Secondary College, and the primary and high schools of 1961 sit just over the line in Airport West. Keilor council asked for a suburb called Niddrie in 1955; it was not officially registered until 26 May 1994. The strip shopping centre sits at the tramline's corner on Keilor Road.

Steele Creek, a tributary of the Maribyrnong, runs through the suburb and makes the western boundary, with wetlands along that edge and the old Niddrie quarry across the creek in Keilor East. The Calder Freeway is the northern boundary, Hoffmans Road the eastern and Rosehill Road the southern. A block near the wetlands may sit low. If the lawn stays soft for days after rain, that belongs on the listing; nobody cuts wet ground well.

Moonee Valley counts the strip as part of your property for its local law. Long grass and combustible material are out, grass and weeds are held under 200 mm measured from the ground, and council officers inspect before summer with the power to clear a strip and bill the owner. Tree planting and pruning on the strip are council work only. Clippings go to the green-lid FOGO bin alongside food scraps, emptied every second week, opposite the recycling.
