Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Essendon lawn

  • Established gardens: describe what edges the lawn. It is most of the work and most of the quote.
  • Deep period blocks: say how the back is reached. A Victorian side path is not always a mower's width.
  • Under the big trees near the creek, buffalo at 50 mm or higher; couch only in the sun.

Essendon lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Essendon?+

For 180 m² of lawn the number is $110-$155 per visit. Period gardens with a lot of edging quote over it; a courtyard near the station under.

Does Moonee Valley mow nature strips in Essendon?+

No - the property owner does. Moonee Valley's local law has grass and weeds on the strip kept under 200 mm, officers inspect before summer, and the council can clear an overgrown strip and recover the cost. Add the strip to your listing and it is done in the same visit.

Do mowers edge along garden beds and hedges?+

Yes - mowing, edges and a blow-down are a standard visit. If the garden is large or intricate, say so and the quotes allow for the time.

About Essendon

Essendon lawns come with gardens. The period houses on the wide streets have front lawns framed by hedges and beds, a nature strip under a mature tree, and a back garden that has been worked for a century. The blocks are deep rather than wide, the side paths were built for people rather than machines, and the lawn itself is often the easy part - the edging along beds, paths and hedges is where a visit's time goes. Near the station and Mount Alexander Road, apartments and townhouses add small courtyards to the mix.

Soil is the north-west's basalt clay, but Essendon's gardens have had generations of compost and mulch on top of it, so lawns here are better than the plain's average. Couch and kikuyu on the open lawns; buffalo under the trees. Moonee Ponds Creek runs along the east and north and the Maribyrnong on the south-west, and the streets that drop toward them get more shade and damp. Windy Hill and Essendon Airport are the other two big open spaces, neither of them a park.

Essendon is City of Moonee Valley, whose local law has property owners keep the nature strip free of long grass, under 200 mm, with officers inspecting before summer. Street trees are the council's to plant and prune. The organics bin, green lid, food scraps and garden waste, is emptied fortnightly, alternating with recycling. Essendon, Glenbervie and Strathmore stations are on the Craigieburn line and tram 59 runs down Mount Alexander Road.
