Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Alphington lawn

  • A Darebin bin is fortnightly and a Yarra one weekly, so the council on your rates notice decides where the clippings go.
  • On a slope down to the Yarra or Darebin Creek, say where the low end is and whether it stays soft.
  • Backing onto Darebin Parklands, say whether the rear boundary is fenced and what comes over it.

Alphington lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Alphington?+

Going by the model, $110-$160 covers 180 m² of lawn in Alphington for one visit. The mower bids on the area the aerial gives for your own block, so a Victorian lot on Park Crescent with lawn down the slope will run above that and a YarraBend courtyard under.

Which nature strip rule applies in Alphington, Darebin's or Yarra's?+

Whichever council is on your rates notice. Darebin makes the owner and resident responsible for the strip and can fine under its local laws; Yarra relies on residents mowing theirs as an established expectation and treats the strip as public land that must not become a hazard. Under either, the upkeep is yours, and Yarra's street trees are the council's.

My lawn runs down to Darebin Creek. What should the listing say?+

Where the low end is and whether it stays soft after rain, whether the rear boundary is a fence or opens onto Darebin Parklands, and what comes over it. A block up the slope toward Heidelberg Road is a different cut from one at the creek end, and the aerial shows the outline but not the fall.

About Alphington

Housing came in three phases. Late-Victorian subdivisions first, Fulham Grange on the Perry Brothers' orchards and St James Park around Alphington Street and Park Crescent, with the Lucerne Estate villas of 1885; Edwardian growth after the railway upgrades, in Queen Anne and Federation Bungalow; then post-war Californian Bungalows, the population going from 625 in 1901 to 2,797 in 1921 and 4,780 in 1933. A fourth phase is the mill site. Australian Paper Mills bought the Woodlands estate beside the Chandler Highway in 1919, the mill ran until 2012, and the site was demolished in 2017 for the 16.5 ha YarraBend housing development. A lawn there is younger than any other in the suburb; say when the turf went down so the mower sets the deck for it.

The ground slopes to the water on two sides. Darebin Parklands run along the creek, Alphington Park has the oval and the bowling club, Latrobe Golf Club has been on Farm Road since about 1938, and revegetated wetlands sit near the river on the old swimming-pool site. River red gums by the station are likely older than settlement. The suburb is 2.8 km² at about 37 m, and the Darebin Creek bridge on Heidelberg Road has been there in one form since the 1840s, the stone arch since 1864. Say where your lawn drops to and whether the low end stays soft; a creek-frontage block and a block up the slope are different jobs.

Two councils share the suburb, City of Darebin and City of Yarra, and the rates notice names the council. Darebin puts the strip's upkeep on owners and residents and can fine under its local laws; its food and green waste bin, light-green lid, goes out every second week, opposite recycling, 120 L unless you pay extra for 240 L, and every kerbside ratepayer has one. Yarra works on an established expectation, that residents keep the strip beside them mown; the strip is public land right out to the road, not to become a hazard for feet or fire. Yarra's FOGO bin, lime-green lid, has gone out weekly with the red-lid rubbish since July 2024, and Yarra's street trees are the council's.
