Lawn mowing in Clifton Hill
Clement Hodgkinson laid out the government subdivision of Clifton Hill between 1865 and 1869 on Hoddle's grid, with wider streets than the inner suburbs around it. Most of Collingwood's growth in the 1880s happened here, at about 7 houses to the acre against 15 in Collingwood proper, in red brick and terra cotta tile.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Clifton Hill lawn
- On a terrace the back lawn is reached through the house or by a rear gate, and a mower plans the machine around which, and the gate's width.
- Near Quarries Park or the Merri Creek, mention what the rear boundary is and whether the lawn falls toward the creek.
- Yarra's FOGO bin is weekly. Tick clippings in the bin, mulched in, or taken away when you list.
Clifton Hill lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Clifton Hill?+
Clifton Hill lawns of 180 m² sit at $115-$160 in the model. Bids follow the measured outline of your own block; a terrace front patch measures a fraction of that and prices accordingly, while a free-standing house on one of Hodgkinson's wide streets can measure above it.
Who mows the nature strip in Clifton Hill?+
The resident, by Yarra's established expectation; the strip is public land from your boundary to the road and must be kept clear of trip hazards and fire risk. The street tree on it is covered by the council's Street Tree Policy. Name the strip as you list and the mower cuts it on the same trip.
Is the ground in Clifton Hill rock?+
There was a basalt quarry on the eastern side, working from the 1850s to the 1950s before the pit became a tip and then Quarries Park. How deep the soil runs over rock on your own lot is yours to find out. If your lawn bakes off quickly in summer or sits wet in winter, say so when you list.
About Clifton Hill
Housing is single and double storey Victorian and Edwardian, free-standing and terraced; in 2011 separate houses were 30.9% of dwellings, row houses 47.4% and flats 21.3%. John Knipe added Hill to the old Clifton Farm name and auctioned 64 freehold lots on 18 September 1871, after government sales had begun in 1864. Gold Street primary opened in 1874, the cable tram came in 1887 and grew the Queens Parade shops, the station opened in 1888 and Spensley Street primary in 1891. Hoddle Street divides the western precinct from the eastern. Say whether yours is the front patch of a terrace, the front and back of a free-standing house, or the grass a flat block fronts onto.
A basalt quarry worked between Yambla Street and the Merri Creek from the 1850s until the 1950s, then the pit took a tip, and by the 1990s the site was Quarries Park with an adventure playground and a skate park. Darling Gardens and Mayors Park are the western reserves. The Merri Creek is the boundary there, with the Merri Creek Trail and the Capital City Trail running through, and the suburb sits at about 38 m, 1.57 km² between Alexandra Parade, the Eastern Freeway and the creek. Basalt under one quarry says nothing about the depth of soil on your lot, so tell the mower what your lawn does after rain and in a dry February.
Clifton Hill is in the City of Yarra, which counts on residents maintaining and mowing the strip along their own property, an established expectation rather than a council round; the strip is public land out to the road and is not to turn into a trip hazard or a fire one. Street trees on it come under the Street Tree Policy and are the council's, so leave planting, pruning and removal to them. Garden waste goes in Yarra's lime-green-lid FOGO bin with the food scraps, emptied weekly on the same day as the red-lid rubbish since the week beginning 1 July 2024, so a week's clippings have somewhere to go.
