About Kew
Kew's lawns are the biggest and oldest in this list. The mansions and the interwar houses that followed them have front lawns you can see from the street over a hedge, a nature strip under a plane tree, and a back garden that has been designed, planted and edged for a hundred years. Along the river the blocks are deep; on the ridges toward Balwyn they are sunnier. Around Kew Junction and the nine schools there are apartments and townhouses with small courtyards.
The soil is good - the east's sedimentary loam, improved by generations of gardening - and the grass is whatever was chosen for the garden: couch on the formal lawns, buffalo under trees, fescue on the shaded terraces. The mowing is not the skill; the edging along beds, the trimming around a hedge that someone else clips, and the blow-down of a long gravel path are. A tidy, careful mower is worth more here than a fast one.
