Lawn mowing in Ivanhoe

Ivanhoe runs from the Upper Heidelberg Road ridge - with the Town Hall's green neon clock on top - down to the Yarra and the golf course on the south and Darebin Creek on the west. Its streets are named from Walter Scott's novel; Chelsworth dates from 1860, and the shops went up between 1915 and 1940.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Ivanhoe lawn

  • Established gardens: say what edges the lawn - beds, hedges, a stone path. It is most of the work.
  • Ridge blocks slope; river-flat blocks flood the odd corner in a wet winter. Note either.
  • Weekly FOGO takes the clippings and the autumn leaves. Choose 'green bin' when you list.

Ivanhoe lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Ivanhoe?+

Expect $110-$160 a time on 180 m² of lawn. If the lawn is edged by garden beds, hedges and paths, the edging adds to the time and the quote runs over the guide; a small courtyard near Ivanhoe or Darebin station sits under it.

Is the nature strip my responsibility in Ivanhoe?+

Yes. Banyule's rule is that residents keep the strip in front neat and tidy, with the council mowing only where one has become a hazard. Put it on your listing and it is done with the lawn.

Do mowers do the edges along garden beds?+

Yes, as part of a standard visit - mowing, edges and a blow-down. If the garden is large or intricate, say so when you list so the quotes allow for it.

About Ivanhoe

Ivanhoe lawns are big, old and shaded more often than not. The Edwardian and interwar houses on the ridge have deep blocks with a front lawn behind a hedge, a nature strip under a mature street tree, and a back garden that has been tended for a century. Toward the river the blocks flatten and the gardens grow; toward Darebin Creek and the station they tighten into townhouses and apartments with small courtyards. The 2021 library hub, the 1937 Town Hall and the Upper Heidelberg Road shops are the centre.

Good drainage, heavy tree cover, established garden beds: it is buffalo and fescue country under the canopy, couch on the open lawns. The mowing itself is not hard; the edging along beds and paths and the trimming around a garden that was planted before the mower's grandparents were born is what takes the time, and a careful mower is worth more than a fast one.

City of Banyule: weekly food-and-garden collection, and residents keep the nature strip mown and neat. Ivanhoe covers 5.1 square kilometres and the ridge sits 55 metres up. Ivanhoe and Darebin stations are on the Hurstbridge line; the golf course and the Yarra are the southern edge and Darebin Creek the western one.
