Lawn mowing in Fairfield
Charles Henry James bought large tracts here in the early 1880s and sold them as Fairfield Park, after Fairfield in Derbyshire. A tram ran along Station Street from 1884 to 1890, the Collingwood-Heidelberg railway opened in 1888, and Fairfield Park was the Outer Circle junction in 1891-93.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Fairfield lawn
- The standard Darebin bin is 120 L. Ask for a mulching cut on the big weeks, or say if you've paid for the 240 L.
- On the Yarra side of the line? Tell the mower which council you pay, because the bin day and the strip rule change with it.
- If part of the lawn stays wet into October, mark it so the mower doesn't rut it.
Fairfield lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Fairfield?+
$110 to $160 a visit for a 180 m² Fairfield lawn in our model. A lawn front and back sits inside that band, a small courtyard under it.
Who is responsible for the nature strip in Fairfield?+
The owner or resident. Darebin's local laws put the upkeep of the strip on you and allow fines where it is neglected. The Yarra portion of the suburb answers to the City of Yarra instead. Either way, list it with the lawn.
How often is the green waste bin collected in Fairfield?+
Every two weeks in Darebin, on the week recycling is not collected. The bin is 120 L as standard and 240 L for an extra fee, and every kerbside ratepayer has one.
About Fairfield
The post office opened on 21 February 1887, the Methodist church that year, the Grandview Hotel in 1888 and the primary school in 1891. Station Street was the shopping strip by the mid-1920s, and Fairfield North primary opened in 1928. The river frontage went to institutions: the Yarra Bend asylum from 1848, the Queen's Memorial Infectious Diseases Hospital from 1904 (now Melbourne Polytechnic) and Fairlea prison from 1925 to 1996. Fairfield moved from Heidelberg to Northcote council in 1962 and into Darebin in 1994.
Fairfield sits on basalt land. The clay that comes with basalt is heavy in winter and cracks by summer. Grange Road is the eastern boundary, Darebin Road the northern, and the Yarra closes the south. Population was 872 in 1901, 4,892 by 1933 and 5,946 in 2011, in 3.4 square kilometres.
Darebin makes owners and residents responsible for the upkeep of the nature strip, with fines possible under its local laws. The light-green-lid food and green waste bin comes every two weeks alternating with recycling, 120 L as standard, 240 L for an extra fee, and is mandatory for all kerbside ratepayers. A small part of Fairfield falls in the City of Yarra, where the rules are that council's.
