Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Whittlesea lawn

  • The green bin only arrived in June 2026. Say whether yours has turned up, or whether clippings need to go with the mower.
  • On a larger lot, give the mown area in metres rather than the block size. Paddock doesn't count.
  • Long grass at the strip is your legal problem here. Put it on the listing and it's cut on the same visit.

About Whittlesea

Settlers were in the district by 1837. The Anglican church and school date from 1855, and the heritage-listed primary school of 1878 was built of local stone. The fire brigade formed on 17 December 1926, and the town was a relief centre in the Black Saturday fires of 7 February 2009. Population stayed around 500 between the wars and was 535 in 1961; then 1,301 in 1981, 2,370 in 2001 and 3,952 in 2011.

The township is kept outside the Urban Growth Boundary and sits near three streams at the headwaters of the Plenty River. An 1865 description calls the district mostly flat farmland used for grazing. A mower here goes on what the customer tells them, and the size of the lawn matters more than the size of the lot.

The City of Whittlesea makes owners and residents legally responsible for mowing the nature strip next to their land and keeping grass, weeds and scrub down. The 240 L light-green-lid food and garden waste bin reached all residential properties in June 2026 and is charged through the rates from 1 July 2026, with no opt-in fee. It is collected fortnightly, on the alternate week to recycling and the same day as rubbish. Rubbish stays weekly and glass goes every four weeks.
