Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Doreen lawn

  • Sloping Laurimar blocks: say whether the back lawn is terraced and whether there is a batter. It is the difference between a 30-minute job and an hour.
  • Rural-residential blocks east of Yan Yean Road want a ride-on. List the whole area and mowers with the gear will quote; the ones without will pass.
  • Doreen sits higher than Mill Park and the mornings are colder. Ask for the cut to go up a notch through winter and skip mowing on a white morning.

Doreen lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Doreen?+

A typical 180 m² Laurimar lawn runs $100-$145 a visit by our model. A steep terraced block costs more; an acreage block on the east side is priced by area with a ride-on and is a different number again.

Nature strips in Doreen - who mows them?+

The resident, in both councils. The City of Whittlesea requires it; in Nillumbik you can mow exotic-grass nature strips in kerbed streets and clear fine fuels from the road reserve for fire safety.

Can I get acreage or ride-on mowing in Doreen?+

Yes. List the full area and note that it is a paddock or a large block. Mowers with ride-ons quote on area and grass length, and the acreage guide sets out what to expect.

About Doreen

On the Laurimar side the lawns are estate lawns - new kikuyu or couch on clay, small front, modest back, wide nature strip - and the main difference from Mernda next door is the slope. Laurimar was built up and down the hill, so plenty of blocks have a terraced back lawn, a retaining wall and a batter you would not want to push a mower across. That is line-trimmer work and it takes longer; a mower who has seen the block from the aerial will quote for it properly. Laurimar is a Delfin estate, and the Plenty River bush runs along the west side of the suburb.

East of Yan Yean Road it changes completely. Blocks run to acres, the grass is pasture more than lawn, and the job is a ride-on or a slasher rather than a push mower. Those properties also sit in country where the Nillumbik and Whittlesea fire rules apply, and keeping the grass down before summer is part of that. Mowie lists both kinds of job; the acreage guide explains how the big ones are priced.

Doreen is split between the City of Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik. Both leave nature-strip mowing to the resident; Nillumbik also lets residents remove dry grass and other fine fuels from the road reserve for fire-hazard reduction. The suburb was Hazel Glen from 1844 until 1895, and the name survives in Hazel Glen College, one of six schools here.
