About Cranbourne
The Ruffys kept the Cranbourne Inn, and the town's name may come from Cranbourne in Berkshire or from Viscount Cranborne by way of that inn. A post office opened in 1857, the turf club in 1860 and the racecourse in 1864. Meteorites found here in 1860 went as far as the British Museum, which holds the largest. From the 1860s William Lyall organised the drainage of the Koo Wee Rup swamp to the south-east into farmland. The railway from Melbourne reached the town in 1887, and dairying and market gardens followed.
Housing came with post-war industry spreading out from Dandenong. Population went from 1,800 in 1976 to 14,005 in 1986; the Centro shopping centre, now Cranbourne Park, opened in 1984. Cranbourne North, West, East and South were split off, leaving the suburb proper at 9.6 square kilometres. Reserves include J&P Camm, Donnelly, Clyde and Lawson Poole, plus Junction Village and Glover. Settlers Run golf course opened in 2007.
Cranbourne is City of Casey. A Casey nature strip is council land kept by the property owner or occupier, in the council's own words, with no grass-height figure published and overgrown grass a matter for the Casey Community Local Law 2025. Food and garden waste goes in the green-lid bin every fortnight. The Cranbourne line was duplicated in 2022.
