Lawn mowing in Kealba

Kealba was the Macrae family's farm, oats and horses and cows and sheep on part of William Taylor's old Overnewton Estate, until the first land auction on 22 March 1969. The name is Keilor and St Albans run together, chosen over Albakei and Keialba when the high school asked for a new name in July 1970.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Kealba lawn

  • Observatory Point blocks were sold on their views, which means slope; how steep, and whether the lawn is terraced, changes the machine.
  • Riverside blocks near the Taylors Creek wetland: mention if the low corner stays wet.
  • Kealba's green bin is opt-in. No bin? Have the clippings taken away, or the cut mulched back in.

Kealba lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Kealba?+

A 180 m² Kealba lawn comes to about $100-$145 on the guide. That is the guide, not the quote; the quote is off your own lawn's traced area, and a terraced Observatory Point block with two levels can price above it.

Who looks after the nature strip in Kealba?+

You do, for the grass; the council for the tree. Brimbank plants, prunes and maintains the street trees; residents are expected to mow and weed the strip and keep it hazard-free. It does not run a mowing round, and it will inspect a strip that is reported.

How should a sloping Kealba lawn be cut?+

Across the slope where it is safe, at a slightly higher setting. The Observatory Point subdivisions east of Stenson Road were sold on their views, so a fall is worth describing when you list; say how much and the mower brings the right machine.

About Kealba

The streets off Sunshine Avenue date from the late 1960s, when the Catholic primary went up about 1968 and Driscolls Road was still Fox Road; those lawns have had more than fifty years to settle. East of Stenson Road the late-1990s subdivisions were sold as Observatory Point, with Orbital Drive, Meteor Rise, Nebula Court and Pulsar Place marketed on the views to Brimbank Park, the EJ Whitten Bridge and the city. Turf there is getting on for thirty years old, not new, and a block sold on its views is worth describing for slope; which way yours runs belongs on the listing.

The east of the suburb is a linear park along the Maribyrnong River, with a wetland where Taylors Creek joins it, a bike path and a lookout, and Brimbank Park across the water. St Albans Road, Taylors Creek, the river, McIntyre Road, Main Road East and Sunshine Avenue are the boundary, and Malcolm Court and Stenson Road hold light-industrial pockets. The high school closed in 2010-11 and its 6.07 ha site sold in July 2017. A small shopping strip and the Kealba hotel sit west of Sunshine Avenue; bus 421 runs to St Albans and Watergardens. Neither the soil nor the slope is written down anywhere, so the wet-week behaviour of your lawn has to come from you.

Kealba is Brimbank. The nature strip stays council land and the council keeps the street trees, but the grass on it is the household's to mow: the council runs no round for it, relies on residents, and answers reports about strips that have become a hazard. Its green bin is a paid extra rather than part of the rates, fortnightly, sized 140 L or 240 L, until the four-bin system arrives on 1 July 2027 and makes it weekly for everyone.
