About Keilor
James Watson took up the land around 1838-40 and named it after his father's Chapel Keilor property in Scotland. Overnewton homestead was built between 1849 and 1859, the post office opened on 2 March 1854, church schools in 1853, St Augustine's in 1863 and Christ Church in 1877. The township was still under 600 people in the 1960s, a farming district. Post-war suburban expansion followed, and Overnewton Anglican College opened in 1987.
Around a million years ago lava covered the older landscape and left the basalt plain, and the Maribyrnong has been cutting down through it since. The Keilor cranium, found in 1940 near the river's junction with Dry Creek, is dated at about 14,700 years. Basalt clay is wet in winter and cracked by high summer. A block down in the river valley is on different ground, so say how yours drains.
Brimbank keeps the strip as council land but has no mowing round for it, so it relies on residents to mow theirs and keep it free of hazards.
