Lawn mowing in St Albans

The Cosmopolitan Land and Banking Company bought 512 hectares either side of the railway in 1886 and subdivided it in the 1887 land boom, which is why St Albans' streets still curve in semi-circles around the line. It was named after the St Albans of the manager's mother's family.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a St Albans lawn

  • Describe what is in the back yard: trees, beds, paths, anything to mow around.
  • Front and strip only is a smaller job and a smaller price. Worth asking for if that is all you need.
  • Where the driveway is shared with a rear unit, name whose lawn is whose before anyone quotes.

St Albans lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in St Albans?+

Somewhere around $100-$145 where there is 180 m² of grass. Front and strip only prices well under that, and if the back yard is full of beds and paths to trim around, say so - the trimming is often more of the visit than the mowing.

Does Brimbank mow the nature strip?+

No. Brimbank keeps the strips as council land but runs no mowing round for them - it relies on residents to mow, weed and keep theirs free from hazards, and prioritises one that has become a genuine obstruction once it is reported.

Is a smaller mower better for these blocks?+

If the access is tight, yes - a walk-behind and a trimmer get through where a ride-on cannot. Describe the path in and mowers will bring the right gear.

About St Albans

The suburb was almost nothing for sixty years - 276 people in 1911, 826 in 1947 - and then filled in a decade, from about 900 to 7,000 through the 1950s, with Yugoslav, Maltese and Italian families arriving. Kororoit Creek runs through the suburb and Brimbank Park sits on its boundary, and the shops are on Alfrieda Street and Main Road.

These are blocks that have been lived on and gardened for seventy years, so what a mower meets behind the gate is different at every house, and the trimming is often more of the visit than the mowing. Out the front it is the west's usual kikuyu and couch on basalt clay, decades old and dense.

St Albans is City of Brimbank, 17 km north-west of the city. Three stations serve it - Ginifer, St Albans and Keilor Plains - and the level crossing at St Albans came out in 2016. The strip out the front is the resident's: Brimbank relies on householders to mow, weed and keep it free from hazards, and runs no mowing round for it.
