Lawn mowing in Maidstone
Maidstone was surveyed about 1858 south of Ballarat Road and east of Ashley Street and named after the Kent town, but industry got here first: Joseph Raleigh's meat-preserving works opened on the riverbank in 1843, then the powder magazine and the munitions factories. Houses waited for the tram, which only reached the southern edge in 1921.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Maidstone lawn
- The house era, bungalow, concrete, Commission or 1990s estate, tells the mower more about the lawn than the street does.
- Beside Medway or the river reserve: mention if the low side stays wet, so the visit can wait for it to dry.
- In a block of five or more units the green bin has not arrived; tick clippings taken away when you list.
Maidstone lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Maidstone?+
Our guide gives $100-$145 for each cut of a 180 m² Maidstone lawn. What you are quoted is built on your own lawn as traced from the aerial, so a bungalow block with a deep back yard prices above the guide and a townhouse strip of grass below it.
Who mows the nature strip in Maidstone?+
The household, under Maribyrnong's rule: mowing, weeding, trimming the edges and picking up litter. The council chooses and plants the street tree and maintains it, and you may not plant or remove one. Include the strip in the listing and the mower does it with the front lawn.
Which Maidstone lawns are the oldest?+
The ones in front of the 1920s to 1940s weatherboards, Art Deco bricks and Californian bungalows, which came with the 1921 tram. A lawn that old has been patched, relaid in parts and taken over by whatever grass spread fastest, so tell the mower what is in it now rather than what was sown.
About Maidstone
Four ages of lawn share the suburb. The weatherboard, brick Art Deco and Californian bungalow houses of the 1920s to 1940s came with the tram; concrete houses were built in the late 1940s for returned servicemen; the Housing Commission estate, mainly south of Ballarat Road and running into Braybrook, added its share of the 2,500-plus dwellings put up across the two suburbs in the 1950s and 60s; and from the early 1990s factory sites were remade as residential estates. A bungalow lawn can be close to a century old and has been reshaped by every owner. A 1990s estate lawn has had thirty-odd years to root. Say which you have and what grows in it.
The river is the western border. Medway Golf Club, laid out in 1936 with the club formed in 1946, holds 98 acres beside it, and Raleigh's works site is Pipemakers Park and the Living Museum of the West. Three public reserves are inside the boundary, Highpoint is immediately north, tram route 82 serves the northern streets, and a tram depot was completed in 2025. Footscray West Primary opened in 1915, Footscray North in 1921 and Maribyrnong College in 1958. The ground is at 38 m and that is all the histories give; a block near the river or the golf course may sit lower and wetter than one up on Ballarat Road, and you are the one who knows.
Maidstone is Maribyrnong City Council. The nature strip is mown, weeded, edged and kept clear of litter by the household, and the street tree is chosen, planted and looked after by the council, which does not allow residents to plant or remove one. Planting a strip instead of grassing it takes a free permit and plants held under 80 cm. Clippings and food scraps share the green-lid bin, 240 L unless you ask for a 120 L, fortnightly on the week between recycling weeks, paid for in the rates at houses and at unit developments of four or fewer. Larger unit blocks are not on the service yet.
