Lawn mowing in West Footscray

The railway ran through West Footscray from 1859, but trains did not stop until Tottenham station opened in 1891, and the streets stayed mostly rural until the post office of 1914 and the Tottenham State School of 1915. Its basalt quarries earned it the nickname Stoneopolis.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a West Footscray lawn

  • Say which side of the railway you're on and the nearest station. Tottenham and West Footscray sound close and aren't always.
  • Winter on quarry-country clay: if the lawn squelches, ask for the visit pushed a few days rather than cut wet.
  • The 240 L green bin takes a full cut. If you'd rather keep the bin for prunings, ask for a mulched cut instead.

West Footscray lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in West Footscray?+

Our model gives $105-$150 per cut for a 180 m² West Footscray lawn. A block with a front and back lawn sits near it; a corner block with a long strip quotes over.

Do I have to mow the nature strip in West Footscray?+

Yes. Maribyrnong council's rule is that the resident maintains the strip - mowing, weeding, edges and litter - and leaves the street tree to the council. Tick the strip when you list and it is done in the same visit.

Why is the ground so hard in a West Footscray back yard?+

Basalt. The suburb was quarried for bluestone and the clay over the rock cracks open in summer. A higher cut from December does more for it than extra mowing.

About West Footscray

Allotments were sold from the 1850s, and the sea captain Alexander Dove held a large block with a 13-room homestead, but the quarries were the business for decades; James Govan's bluestone went into Melbourne Town Hall. Factories came to Geelong Road in the 1930s, Boon Spa among them, and the Olympic Tyre factory ran on Cross Street from 1934 to 2001. Houses filled the 3.8 square kilometres in the early post-war years, with a neighbourhood shopping centre on Barkly Street midway between Tottenham and West Footscray stations. Soudan, Khartoum and Dongola Roads recall the 1885 Sudan contingent.

The ground is the basalt that was quarried out of it. The clay over basalt holds water in winter and cracks in the heat, and the useful thing to tell a mower is how your own lawn behaves in each. Say what the grass is, too, and whether a fence shades it.

Maribyrnong City Council expects residents to mow the strip, weed it, trim the edges and pick up litter, and it keeps the street trees for itself. A landscaped strip needs a free permit and plants under 80 cm. The green-lid food and garden bin is fortnightly on the alternate week to recycling, 240 L as standard, included in the rates for houses and blocks of up to four units.
