About Maribyrnong
Defence work shaped the place for most of a century. The ordnance factory was added in 1920 and had 8,805 workers at its wartime peak in 1942. Houses grew around it slowly: 697 people in 1921, 2,088 in 1947. The Methodist church opened in 1911, the primary school in 1912 and the high school in 1958 on a former quarry. Highpoint Shopping Centre opened in 1975 with 418 shops, and Homemaker City in 1990. The 128 hectare former explosives factory is earmarked for about 3,000 homes and parkland.
The river encloses the suburb on three sides. The former flood-prone alluvial terraces were developed, and linear parks and river trails follow the bends. Edgewater, near Highpoint, is the main modern subdivision. The terraces are river ground rather than basalt plain, so say what your lawn does after a wet week.
Maribyrnong City Council has the resident maintain the nature strip, with mowing, weeding, edge trimming and litter, and it plants and looks after the street trees. Planted strips need a free permit and plants under 80 cm. The green-lid food and garden organics bin is fortnightly, alternating with recycling, 240 L as standard and covered by the rates for houses and blocks of up to four units. Five-plus unit buildings do not have it yet.
