Lawn mowing in Truganina
Truganina still has its village centre at the corner of Woods and Dohertys roads, with an 1865 cemetery, a recreation reserve and farm ruins. A Wesleyan chapel opened near Skeleton Creek in 1852, and the bluestone school of 1857 ran as State School 192 until a grass fire took it in 1968.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Truganina lawn
- Check your rates notice and name Wyndham or Melton. The strip rules differ on either side.
- After heavy rain, wait for the ground to dry. A soaked lawn here tears rather than cuts.
- Near the warehouses, tell the mower what the parking is like out the front.
Truganina lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Truganina?+
The model puts 180 m² of lawn at $100-$145 per mow. If the ground is still soft from rain the mower may ask to push the day back rather than tear the turf, and a lawn that has gone a month or two uncut is quoted as a first cut.
Which council covers Truganina?+
Both. The suburb is split between the City of Wyndham and the City of Melton, so check your rates notice. Wyndham's local law caps strip grass at 30 cm and takes reports; Melton says outright that it does not mow or water nature strips and leaves the whole job with the resident.
Why does the ground crack open in summer?+
It is the basalt plain. These cracking clays shrink and swell with the seasons enough to move paths and slabs, and a scalped lawn on them bakes. More leaf through summer keeps the soil shaded and slows it down.
About Truganina
Fifty-eight people lived here in 1911 and more than 36,000 do now, with a 2013 plan allowing about 9,400 more homes over twenty years. The suburb covers 56 square kilometres, so the estates share it with Mount Atkinson in the north and one of Wyndham's logistics precincts - the Kmart distribution centre here is the largest building by footprint in Australia. Federation Trail runs along the south and Skeleton Creek down the west, and the old village added a Baptist church in 1862 and a post office in 1878.
The lawns are the standard western-plain job: instant turf over cracking basalt clay. Those clays swell wet and shrink hard enough to move paths and light structures, and grass on them goes soft in August and sets hard in February. August is the end that costs people money, because mowing a soaked lawn tears the turf rather than cutting it. Give it a few dry days.
Which council you deal with depends on which side of the line you are on. Truganina is split between the City of Wyndham and the City of Melton, and they write the nature strip differently: Wyndham sets a 30 cm limit in its local law and takes reports, while Melton states plainly that it does not mow or water strips at all. Your rates notice settles which one is yours.
