Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Derrimut lawn

  • The year the turf was laid matters here. A 2019 lawn and a 2006 lawn in the same street want different cut heights.
  • Estate strips can be a third of the grass; tick the strip when you want it in the quote.
  • The quote is for the housing off Mt Derrimut Road, not the factory estates or the golf course. Give your nearest cross street.

Derrimut lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Derrimut?+

Derrimut's guide, visit by visit, for a lawn of 180 m² reads $100-$145. Estate blocks here can have a small front and a wider strip, and the bid follows your own traced outline, so the front-and-strip job can come in under the guide.

Is the nature strip mine in Derrimut?+

The grass on it is. Brimbank keeps the land and the street tree, and does not mow residential strips; it leaves residents to keep the strip cut, weeded and clear, and follows up reports about ones that have become a hazard. Tick it alongside the lawn and it goes in the same trip.

How high should a new Derrimut lawn be cut?+

At 60-70 mm over its first two summers if the turf is recent, at most a third of the leaf per visit; after that, the normal height for the grass. Derrimut's estate is 2000s and 2010s, so a lawn laid in the first wave has long since settled and can be cut lower than one laid in the last few years.

About Derrimut

The lawns this page is about are the ones around Mt Derrimut Road and Derrimut Village, the estate that went up through the 2000s and 2010s after the locality was separated from Deer Park in 1998. Most of Derrimut's 13 square kilometres is not houses at all: Sunshine Golf Club has been on the old Mount Derrimut homestead site since November 2007, 154 hectares of grassland have not been ploughed since 1912, and factory estates and the Fresenius Kabi pharmaceutical plant take much of what is left. The housing sits inside that along Mt Derrimut Road, served by Derrimut Primary, St Lawrence Catholic Primary and Derrimut Village, a shopping centre of 18-plus retailers that was expanded in 2020.

An estate lawn of this age is as old as its street, and the difference between one laid in 2005 and one laid in 2018 is real: the first has had time to root, the second may still be in its first summers and wants the high cut. The ground is the Werribee plains, with Mount Derrimut the one rise, and the open space is a nature reserve, linear reserves and sports ovals rather than a creek. Foleys Road, Robinsons Road, the Western Ring Road and Boundary Road are the boundary; Deer Park is the nearest station and bus 400 runs on Robinsons Road.

Brimbank is the council, and the strip along Mt Derrimut Road's side streets is the household's to mow. The council owns it and plants the trees on it, and it will inspect one that is reported, but its mowing program does not include residential strips; the household keeps the grass down and the strip free of hazards, and granitic sand, synthetic turf and paving are not allowed on it. Green waste is an opt-in bin here until 1 July 2027: fortnightly, on an annual fee, at 140 L or 240 L, after which the four-bin system makes it weekly and part of the rates.
