About Deer Park
The factory built the first houses - Nobel put up homes for its workers around the plant in the 1920s, and ICI built more after the war - but the suburb most people live in is mid-1970s, when the land west of the ICI plant and a Commonwealth reserve was subdivided. Three state primary schools and a high school opened between 1971 and 1976, which is when the houses went up.
Fifty years on, those lawns are established kikuyu and couch on the west's basalt clay: thick and quick in spring, straw-coloured and stopped after the first frosts. The brown is dormancy, not death, and it comes back in October. What the lawn wants by then is a fortnightly cut, because taking more than about a third of the leaf at once leaves it yellow.
Deer Park is City of Brimbank, and the strip out the front is the resident's to mow and keep clear. Kororoit Creek, which gave the suburb its first name, has a long linear reserve with walking trails through the suburb, and the shopping centre opened in 1979 and became Brimbank Central in 1995.
