Lawn mowing in Ardeer

Ardeer took its name from its railway station, after the Scottish town that housed a major explosives factory, and grew beside the Deer Park explosives works after Nobel took it over about 1929 and built housing for its workers. The main residential growth came in the 1950s, in the area between the station and the Western Highway.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Ardeer lawn

  • On a creek-side block the boundary with the linear park may be a fence or open grass, and the two are edged differently.
  • The mower is heading for the housing between the station and the Western Highway, not the plant. Give the nearest cross street.
  • Seventy-year lawns are usually a mix of grasses; name what dominates, and where the grass gives out.

Ardeer lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Ardeer?+

Ardeer's guide figure, each visit, is $100-$145 on 180 square metres of grass. The number a mower gives you comes from your own lawn's area, not the suburb average, so a 1950s block with a lawn front and back quotes above it and a unit under.

What does Brimbank expect of the strip in Ardeer?+

That the household mows it. Land and tree are the council's, the tree planted and pruned by council crews, but no council mowing reaches a residential strip; the household keeps it cut and free of hazards. Only grass and plants under 50 cm can go on it. Add the strip to the listing and it is in the quote.

The creek trail's native vegetation is next to my fence. Can the mower cut it?+

No. The linear park along Kororoit Creek is council ground, and its native vegetation is kept on purpose; the household's grass stops at the boundary. Say where your boundary runs when you list, and if the fence is open to the reserve say that too, so the mower's trace and the quote cover your lawn and nothing beyond it.

About Ardeer

Ardeer is a residential-industrial suburb immediately east of the Orica plant, and the page is about the housing half. The streets between Ardeer station and the Western Highway were the first, and the post office of 1 December 1953, the Mother of God school of 1955 and Ardeer Primary of 1961 mark the years the houses filled in. A 1950s block here has had seventy years of the same lawn, or a relaid one over it, and the useful description is of the block as it is now: what is fenced, what is paved, where the grass has given up under a tree.

Kororoit Creek runs along the northern and western borders, and the Kororoit Creek Trail's linear park follows it with native vegetation; funding in 2007 went to linking it with the Federation Trail. The Western Ring Road loops the same two sides. Until 1998 the suburb ran south to Boundary Road, and the land south of Forrest Street was then rezoned into Sunshine West and Derrimut, so an address that was Ardeer thirty years ago may not be now. Westgate FC, formed in 1985, plays here. Nobody has written down the soil or the slope, so the creek-side blocks are the ones to describe with care.

Brimbank's rule for the nature strip is the one it applies across the city: the strip is the council's land and the tree is the council's tree, and the grass is cut by the household, because the council runs no round for it and looks to residents to keep it mown, weeded and hazard-free. Reported strips are inspected, hazards prioritised. Rates pay for rubbish and recycling only; a food and garden organics bin gets ordered on a 12-month minimum, 140 L or 240 L, emptied every second week, and turns weekly and universal with the four-bin system on 1 July 2027.
