About Laverton
Laverton is a small suburb, under 5,000 people, on generous blocks: the Housing Commission estate of the 1950s, built for staff at the RAAF base, is still the dominant housing, post-war brick and weatherboard with room around it. Seventy years of different owners and tenants have done different things with those blocks, and two neighbouring ones can be a bowling green and a hayfield.
The grass is kikuyu and couch on the plain's clay, and where a block has been left it gets away properly. A lawn that has not been cut for a couple of months is a first cut, not a mow: it comes down in stages, and the clippings off a big back yard on a spring afternoon are more than a green bin holds.
