Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Aspendale lawn

  • Inland of the highway the ground was wetland; a lawn that stays wet after rain is cut on a dry day, so mention it.
  • On the beach side, a lawn that dries out in summer wants a higher cut; a scalped lawn browns off.
  • Kingston's bin comes every second week, so decide whether clippings are binned, mulched or taken away.

Aspendale lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Aspendale?+

One cut of 180 m² in Aspendale guides at $105-$155. The number that matters is the area the aerial shows on your block, and a unit courtyard is well under it.

Who prunes the tree on my Aspendale nature strip?+

Kingston. The strip trees are council-owned and pruned every two years; a resident can request one but not plant one. The grass around them is yours to mow, water and keep, and the council's mower only comes when a strip has turned into a hazard.

Is Aspendale sandy or swampy?+

Both. The coast was sand dune complexes and the inland was wetland, drained in the early 1880s. The suburb sits only a few metres above sea level. A lawn on the beach side of the highway may dry fast in summer; one east of the line may sit wet in winter. Tell the mower what yours does.

About Aspendale

At settlement the coast was large sand dune complexes and the inland was wetland. The railway from Mordialloc to Frankston came through in 1882, and the Carrum Swamp was drained in the early 1880s, leaving the foredune to build on. Racing stopped in 1931, motor racing followed, and by the late 1940s the track was gone. The post office opened in 1908 and the surf life saving club in 1926; Rosedale Golf Club took over the former Australasian links around 1950. Then came the subdivisions. The 1950s, 60s and 70s were the decades when Aspendale was extensively cut up for housing, with the primary school in 1959, the Catholic church in 1961 and St Louis de Montfort primary in 1965.

The whole suburb is flat and low, only a few metres above the sea, at about 5 metres. Only modest remnants of the dunes survive near the beach, and the largest remnant of the wetland is protected in the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands. Nepean Highway and the Frankston line cut the 2.9 square kilometres in two, with more medium-density housing on the beach side and low-density housing inland. Mordialloc Creek lies to the north and the Mordialloc main drain is the eastern boundary. Which side of the highway your block is on, and what the lawn does after rain, is worth a line.

Mowing and watering the strip outside an Aspendale house is the resident's job. Kingston prunes the trees on it every two years and comes out for hazards, and those trees belong to the council. Anything else planted on a strip is held to half a metre high and half a metre in from the kerb. Clippings can go in the green-lid bin, which Kingston counts as a standard service and empties every second week, alternating with the recycling, the same day as garbage.
