About Mordialloc
A squatting run from 1837 and an Aboriginal reserve from about 1850, Mordialloc was cut into large allotments in the 1860s, with building blocks west of Chute Street by 1863. The post office opened on 17 October 1863 and the Bridge Hotel and primary school in 1868. The railway from Caulfield came in 1881 and Epsom racecourse in 1889. Mordialloc became a borough on 26 May 1920 and a city in 1926, and it expanded fastest in the 1930s and 40s: 9,216 people in 1933, 14,513 in 1947. A 1970s green ban stopped a supermarket that would have demolished homes. The city merged into Kingston on 15 December 1994.
The Carrum Swamp lay to the east, and land east of Chute Street was flood-prone, with the creek regularly flushed. The Patterson River drain was dug in 1879 to drain the swamp. South of Mordialloc the beach ridges held back drainage and made swamps, and north of it the coast is eroding cliff. The suburb also lies inside the Sandbelt triangle of dune sand over the Brighton Group. The golf course dates from 1913 and Mordialloc-Carrum High School from 1929. Chute Street is the only line the history draws; which of those histories a given block carries is yours to tell the mower.
Kingston has residents mow, water and generally maintain the nature strip, with the council handling hazards and pruning the strip trees every two years. The trees are the council's. Low plantings on the strip are allowed to 0.5 metres, set 0.5 metres back from the kerb.
