About Parkdale
Growth was quick. Five shops in 1923 had become more than 25 by 1933, most of them in Como Parade, and by then the place had a progress association, a life-saving club, a hall, churches and a picture theatre. The 1958 Thrift Park drive-in centre at Nepean Highway and Lower Dandenong Road, Parktone primary in 1961 and Parkdale High School in 1964 are the post-war additions. Parkdale only became a suburb in its own right in 1999, when it absorbed Mentone East. A new station opened in August 2024, and a rail bridge in 2025 took out the Warrigal Road and Parkers Road crossings.
The suburb sits between Mentone and Mordialloc on the Frankston line, 3.6 square kilometres at about 22 metres, with the beach about 750 metres from the station. Walter Galt Reserve is on Warren Road and the Kingston Library on Parkers Road; shops are at Parkdale Plaza on Nepean Highway and Warren Village on Warren Road. Say what your own ground does.
Kingston's position on the nature strip is that residents mow, water and maintain it, and the council prunes the trees every two years and deals with hazards. The trees belong to the council: you can ask for one, not plant one. Ground covers and plants on the strip stay under 0.5 metres and 0.5 metres off the kerb, and on a corner they stay under 0.2 metres. The food and garden bin has a green lid and is emptied every second week, on the alternate week to recycling and the same day as garbage.
