Lawn mowing in Carnegie
William Murray Ross controlled the land that became Carnegie by 1876 and had already pitched the Rosstown project: a sugar-beet mill, a railway to serve it and a housing estate. The mill never began production, the railway was never used, and the station took the Carnegie name in May 1909.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Carnegie lawn
- Glen Eira expects the strip edged as well as cut, so ask for both if you want the strip done properly.
- If the grass fronts a block of 1960s flats, say whether it is shared and who is paying, so one quote covers it.
- The side gate decides the machine: under 70 cm is push-mower territory.
Carnegie lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Carnegie?+
$110-$160 is the model's range for 180 m² of Carnegie lawn. Bids are priced off the traced outline of your block, so a corner lot with grass on two sides quotes above that and a flat block's shared front lawn below it.
Who looks after the nature strip in Carnegie?+
The property owner. Glen Eira expects the strip mown, weeded and edged and kept free of rubbish by whoever owns the place beside it; the council keeps the street trees and asks that nobody else plants, prunes or removes them. A Nature Strip Planting Permit is $50 if you want to plant the strip.
Is the ground around Koornang Park low?+
Yes, historically. Leman Swamp was there, cut for peat, and Lord Reserve and Koornang Park were made on it. Whether your own lawn holds water is a different question; if it does after a wet week, put that on the listing.
About Carnegie
The houses came after the railway rather than with it. Estates opened near the station around the turn of the century, the Glen Huntly Road tram reached Grange Road in 1913 and ran on through the middle of Carnegie to Koornang Road in 1926, and by the 1920s there was a substantial shopping strip. The southern part was fully built by the 1940s. Then the big blocks went; through the 1960s and 70s many were recycled as sites for flats and home units. Tell the mower whether the lawn is a house lot's, grass at both ends, or the shared patch in front of a block of flats; the two are measured off different outlines.
The ground has a wet history. Leman Swamp sat here and was worked for peat; Lord Reserve and Koornang Park, with their three ovals and the Carnegie Memorial pool that reopened in 2025, now cover the old swamp. That says the low ground is around the park, not that your block is wet. If your lawn stays soft for days after rain, that goes in the listing. Packer Park has the velodrome that Olympic cyclists trained on between 1956 and 1964. The station was rebuilt in 2017, and since 2018 the Djerring Trail has run under the elevated rail.
Carnegie is City of Glen Eira, and was part of the City of Caulfield before that. The council leaves the nature strip to whoever owns the property beside it, for the mowing, the weeding and the edging, and for keeping it safe with no rubbish on it. Street trees stay the council's. Planting the strip needs a Nature Strip Planting Permit, $50 a time, and without one the council may pull the planting out and bill the owner. Clippings go in the lime-green FOGO bin, part of the standard service and emptied every week; the kitchen caddy for food scraps is free from Glen Eira Town Hall.
