Lawn mowing in Hughesdale

Hughesdale is a residential suburb on Poath Road between the cities of Glen Eira and Monash. Railways shaped it: the Outer Circle line was diverted from the Gippsland line here in 1890, the Rosstown Railway diverged in 1891, and the station opened on 28 February 1925, named for James Vincent Hughes, the Oakleigh mayor who campaigned for it.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Hughesdale lawn

  • The way to the back is a driveway or a side path, and its width decides the machine; narrower than 70 cm and only a push mower fits.
  • Backing onto Galbally Reserve? Say what the back fence is made of and whether the reserve's trees drop onto the lawn.
  • A weekly green bin takes a weekly cut; if you want clippings taken away instead, tick it at listing time.

Hughesdale lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Hughesdale?+

Hughesdale's guide figure for 180 m² is $110-$155, one mow at a time. Your own bids come from the aerial trace of your lawn, so a lot with a long back lawn can price above it and a courtyard below.

Is the nature strip mine to mow in Hughesdale?+

Monash holds the land and expects you, owner or tenant, to keep the grass down; a photo is enough to report an untidy one. Anything planted on it needs a permit. List the strip alongside and both get done in the one visit.

Are Hughesdale lawns old turf or new?+

Nobody has written that down. The houses are pre-war and early post-war, with late-1920s ones still standing in Wilbur Crescent and Euston Road, but a lawn in front of one may be original or relaid last year, so say which. Take no more than about a third off in one go, and if the lawn has been let go, say so and the mower quotes for a first cut, not a maintenance one.

About Hughesdale

The Poath Road Railway Station League got its station in 1925 and the post office followed on 12 December 1927. Houses are pre-war and early post-war: the late-1920s ones are still visible in Wilbur Crescent and Euston Road, and the industrial growth of the 1940s made this a commuter suburb. The primary school opened as Oakleigh South State School in 1924, took the Hughesdale name in 1938 and peaked at 1,296 pupils in 1953. Sacred Heart Girls' College on Warrigal Road, designed by Frederick Romberg and completed in 1957, stands beside a church of about 1925. The Poath Road level crossing was removed in July 2018.

The Rosstown Railway ran to Elsternwick, and its alignment is now Galbally Reserve. Whether the lawn in front of a 1920s or 1940s house is the original turf or has been relaid since is a thing only its owner knows, and it changes the job: a lawn cut hard and low for years reads differently from one that has been let go. Take the photo the listing asks for in daylight and say whether the front is lawn or garden. If the soil sets hard by February, that is the line to add.

The council is Monash. Its nature strips are council land which the owner or occupier is expected to keep maintained; a planted strip needs a permit, a 50 cm limit and the 1.4 m footpath line kept clear, and the street trees are pruned only by the council's own teams. Landfill and recycling alternate fortnightly, but the green-lid bin, 240 L, for garden waste and food scraps has been a weekly service since August 2022 and its cost is part of the rates waste charge.
