Lawn mowing in Glen Huntly

Glen Huntly is named for the ship that reached Port Phillip on 7 April 1840 from Greenock with 157 immigrants and fever on board. The quarantine tents went up at Little Red Bluff, now Point Ormond, and the dirt track that carried supplies down to them became Glen Huntly Road.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Glen Huntly lawn

  • An open side path takes any machine; a gate across it takes only what fits, so its width matters.
  • Tick the nature strip if it is to be cut; the council leaves it to the owner, and it is not part of the lawn unless you say so.
  • The FOGO bin is weekly, so a spring cut can go straight in it, unless you would rather the clippings were taken.

Glen Huntly lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Glen Huntly?+

Glen Huntly lawns of 180 m² come to $110-$155 each in the model. The bid is priced off the aerial of your own lot, so a lawn that measures under 180 m² lands under the figure and one that measures over lands above it.

Who mows the nature strip in Glen Huntly?+

You do, or a mower you list it with. Glen Eira looks to the property owner to mow, weed and edge whatever strip is beside their place and keep rubbish off it. The street tree stays with the council; leave it alone. Plant the strip only with the $50 permit.

Is Glen Huntly on the old swamp?+

West of it. The swamp and heath lands made up much of Caulfield and Carnegie, and Glen Huntly sat to their west at about 49 m. Whether your lawn drains is still yours to describe; say if it stays soft after rain.

About Glen Huntly

The suburb is small, about 1 km north to south and 800 m across at its widest, between Neerim Road, Booran Road, Grange Road and the Woodville Avenue line, just south of the racecourse. The station opened on 19 December 1881 and the tram followed in 1889, yet the land stayed farmed; fewer than 60 houses stood here in 1909. The Closer Settlement Board's Clerk's Home Estate of 1907, the post office the same year, the tram extension to Grange Road in 1913 and the primary school in 1914 filled it in, and by the late 1920s the streets and the shopping strip were complete.

The suburb is at about 49 m, and the district sat west of the swamp and heath lands that made up much of Caulfield and Carnegie. That places Glen Huntly beside the old wet country rather than in it, a note on the district and not on your block. The tram depot of 1924 is about 1 km west. The station was rebuilt with the level crossing removed and got its two-word spelling back on 13 April 2023, after 86 years as Glenhuntly. Say how the lawn drains, where the tap is and how the mower gets to the back.

City of Glen Eira runs the strip rules here. Mowing, weeding and edging the nature strip fall to the owner, as does keeping it safe and free of litter; the street trees are council trees, not for residents to plant, prune or remove. The council's Nature Strip Planting Permit, $50, is required before anything goes into the strip; put a planting in without it and it can be taken out with the bill going to the owner. Lime-green FOGO bins are emptied every week under the standard service, and the kitchen caddy is free at Glen Eira Town Hall.
