About Sandringham
An Anglican church school opened in 1855, and Sandringham Primary is described as one of Victoria's oldest schools. Bluff Town had a post office by 1868 and 183 people in 1881. Land sales at Picnic Point followed rumours of the railway in 1882, the same year as All Souls church. After the trains came, a horse tram ran to Beaumaris from 1888, an 80-room hotel opened in 1889, and the count reached 2,642 by 1911. Sandringham became a borough on 28 February 1917, a town in 1919 and a city in 1923. Royal Melbourne Golf Club moved here in 1932. The city merged into Bayside on 15 December 1994.
The suburb is 3.5 square kilometres at the end of the Sandringham line, beside Port Phillip and about 20 metres above it. The Red Bluff cliffs stand on the Sandringham and Black Rock foreshore, and the submarine HMAS J7 has been the yacht club's breakwater since 1927. Sandringham East primary dates from 1931 and the technical school from 1949.
Bayside is the council. Residents are required by law to maintain their nature strip, though council manages the trees on it, and any planting on the strip is held to 0.6 metres. The food and green bin is optional here: a one-off $104.85 buys a 240 or 120 litre bin with a caddy, and it has been emptied weekly since July 2022 with general waste going fortnightly.
