About Mentone
The Caulfield-Frankston railway opened on 19 December 1881 with a station called Balcombe Road, renamed Mentone in 1884. Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin met Arthur Streeton painting at Mentone Beach in 1886-87, the Heidelberg School years. Schools came quickly: primary 1889, Mentone Girls' Grammar 1899, Kilbreda 1904, Mentone Grammar 1923, St Bede's 1938. The racecourse closed in 1948, and the market gardens and farms were subdivided for housing in the 1950s and 60s, with Thrift Park shopping centre opening in 1958 and Mentone Park primary in 1968. A new station followed the level-crossing removal in 2020.
Mentone Beach runs along Beaumaris Bay from the Beaumaris cliffs. The east side of Port Phillip as far as Mordialloc is cliff undergoing active erosion, and the Black Rock Sandstone is well exposed between Point Ormond and here. The suburb lies inside the Melbourne Sandbelt, the triangle of remnant sand dunes over the Brighton Group that runs from Brighton to Frankston; soils over that formation are very well drained, droughty in summer and low in fertility. That describes the region, not the block, so tell the mower what your own ground does.
Kingston is the council. Residents are responsible for mowing, watering and general maintenance of the nature strip; the council helps with hazards and prunes the strip trees every two years, but does not mow unless the strip is a hazard. Those trees are council-owned, and residents may request one but not plant their own. Anything else planted on the strip stays under 0.5 metres and 0.5 metres back from the kerb. The green-lid food and garden bin is a standard service, emptied fortnightly on alternate weeks with recycling.
