Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Croydon South lawn

  • Name your estate if you are in Olympus Heights, on the eastern side; it tells a mower which end of the suburb you are at.
  • Near Taralla Creek, say whether the low end of the lawn drains after rain or stays soft for days.
  • FOGO is fortnightly here. A big back lawn can fill the bin in one October cut, so say what happens to the rest.

Croydon South lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Croydon South?+

Croydon South comes out at $100-$145 in the guide, priced on a 180 m² lawn. A block with a lawn either end of the house can trace above that on the aerial, and the quote follows the traced grass.

What does Maroondah expect of my nature strip in Croydon South?+

Kept tidy, and unchanged without approval. The council owns the strip, plants the trees on it and may prune or remove landscaping; if it approves a planting, the upkeep passes to you. Mowing needs no approval, so add the strip to the listing.

Is an older Croydon South lawn different to mow?+

A lawn that has been cut since the 1960s is cut at the height it is used to. Say when the house went up, whether the lawn has been relaid, whether the front and back are on one level and whether the side gate is the only way between them.

About Croydon South

The post office came on 1 February 1961, in a mixed business, as the suburb was developed. Croydon South Primary opened in 1967 on Belmont Road West and had 770 pupils within five years; Tinternvale Primary followed in 1976 and a high school about 1977, and the original primary merged into Tinternvale in 2009. A second row of shops came later at the Olympus Heights estate on the eastern side. An ICI research station east of Dorset Road gave way to industrial and warehouse uses. Shops are at the Eastfield Shopping Centre, where Eastfield and Bayswater roads meet, and at Merrindale on Dorset Road; Cheong Park and the Croydon Light Harness Club are the named open ground.

Taralla Creek runs from Croydon's parklands through Croydon South to Dandenong Creek, and the suburb sits about 130 m up with the Dandenong foothills close by. The streets are post-war, built out through the 1960s, so say when the house went up and whether the lawn has been relaid since. Whether your lawn falls toward Taralla Creek, whether the levels are joined by steps, and the side gate in centimetres all belong on the listing; under 70 cm only a push mower fits.

Maroondah City Council holds the nature strip and expects residents to keep it tidy. Changing it needs council approval and any approved planting is then the owner's to look after; the council plants thousands of strip trees a year and may prune or remove landscaping. Lawn clippings go in the FOGO bin with the food scraps, and it goes out fortnightly, alternating with recycling. General waste is weekly.
