About Doncaster East
Schramm's cottage, a Lutheran pastor's home, survives in Rieschieck's Reserve, and German Lane and Bismarck Street were renamed in the First World War. Doncaster East primary opened in 1878 and closed in 1996; the post office dates from 1887. Housing spread from the southern half through the 1970s and 80s, and the schools mark the pace: Beverley Hills primary 1959, Doncaster Heights 1968, St Gregory's 1969, Waldau 1971, Donburn 1973, Doncaster East secondary 1974, Milgate 1983. Population was 26,282 in 2001. The Pines and Tunstall Square are the shopping centres.
The suburb sits between Koonung Creek and Mullum Mullum Creek in hilly terrain, with native vegetation almost wholly cleared apart from riparian bush along Mullum Mullum. Ruffey Creek runs through the middle and Koonung Creek is the southern boundary. Hills and the old pines are the two things to describe: which way the lawn falls and whether needles land on it.
