About Wantirna
The wider area was taken up in the 1870s. Bayswater West primary opened in 1912 and was later renamed Wantirna; the post office came in 1913, a Methodist church in 1914, an apple and pear cool store in 1919 and Wantirna Reserve in 1925. The Bayswater West Progressive Association chose the name in 1913 from an Aboriginal word thought to mean gurgling stream. A drive-in ran on Mountain Highway from 1968 to 1984. Wantirna secondary college and Knox P-12 date from 1982, and the count stood at 14,306 in 2002.
Koomba Park, native bushland between Dandenong Creek and EastLink, opened in 1982. EastLink itself arrived in 2008 and crosses the suburb with interchanges at Boronia Road and Burwood Highway, so which side of it you live on shapes a mower's drive.
