About Vermont
Selectors took up allotments of 50 to 200 hectares from the late 1850s. A single-room school followed in 1872 and the L.L. Vale post office in 1881, renamed Vermont in 1889. By 1913 there was a general store, an Anglican church and a mechanics' institute with a public hall. The 1923 Mitcham & Vermont bus to Mitcham station is recorded as Victoria's first community bus route. In 1925 the Wunderlich tile works opened a clay pit on Mitcham Road, now heritage-listed. Only 711 people lived here in 1933. The name is either County Limerick or von Mueller's phrase about the surrounding green hills; nobody is sure.
Canterbury Road carries the traffic east-west through the centre. Dandenong Creek is the eastern boundary, and Bellbird Dell Reserve runs south from the corner where Canterbury, Mitcham and Boronia Roads meet. The Wunderlich clay pit is a fact about one site on Mitcham Road, not about your block. A short line in the listing about drainage and shade does more than any regional guess.
Vermont is mostly City of Whitehorse with a Maroondah edge.
