Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Mount Martha lawn

  • Slope, more than area, sets the time here, and a block near the hill is likelier to have it than one out toward Moorooduc Highway.
  • Conifers were planted around the summit from 1949; if one stands over your lawn, say whether the needles are to be raked before the cut.
  • No green bin? Ask for the clippings mulched back in or carted off; the Shire's is an opt-in at $178.

Mount Martha lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Mount Martha?+

Our model's figure for a 180 m² Mount Martha lawn is $105 to $150 a visit. A sloping block runs toward the top of that because of the trimming; the bid is built on your lawn's measured area.

Is the nature strip mine to mow in Mount Martha?+

Yes. Mornington Peninsula Shire puts mowing, edging, weeding and litter on the homeowner or tenant and tends only the street trees it planted; landscaping or removing a tree there needs a permit. Add the strip to your job and the mower does both in one go.

Does the hill make a difference to mowing in Mount Martha?+

The rise is granitic and about 160 m, with the public park of 1929 around its summit, while Balcombe Creek and its estuary lie at bay level. A lawn that falls toward a fence means extra trimming along the low fence line. Say on the listing how steep yours is and whether the back can be reached along the side.

About Mount Martha

Captain William Hobson named the hill during his 1836 survey. Grazing and timber-cutting came first; the Balcombe family held The Briars from 1846 until 1976, and 8 hectares with the homestead are now a historic park with woodland, wetland and vineyard. Holiday residences went up on the Esplanade in the 1860s and 70s, Robert Watson's Mount Martha Estate of over 700 allotments sold through the 1880s until the depression of the 1890s stopped it, and the 1920s brought a burst of building, Glynt in 1921 and Grey Gables in 1928 on Dominion Road, with more modest holiday houses alongside. Post-war building was mainly holiday houses too, then permanent homes, and the growth of the 1990s and 2000s ran the housing into Mornington, south around Martha Cove and east toward Moorooduc Highway.

The hill marks the start of the Selwyn fault, which runs to the eastern Dandenong Ranges. Land around the summit was kept aside from the 1860s, reserved as Mount Martha public park in 1929 and planted with ornamental conifers from 1949. Balcombe Creek reaches the bay at North beach, and a boardwalk of more than 5 km follows the creek up to The Briars through the estuary where the wartime camp stood; the camp east of Uralla Road became housing in the 1990s. Housing has taken most of the land, and the public park and the golf course on Forest Drive are the open space. On a granitic rise a lawn can fall hard toward the fence, so say how much yours slopes.

Mount Martha is Mornington Peninsula Shire, whose rule puts the nature strip on the homeowner or the tenant for mowing, edging, weeding and litter. The Shire tends the street trees it planted and nothing else there; landscaping or removing a tree on the strip needs a permit, and leaving items on it without a hard-waste booking is illegal. The green-lid bin for food and green waste is 240 L, collected every second week opposite the recycling, and costs $178 a year (2025-26) as an opt-in for the urban area, 70 kg limit. Bentons Square shopping centre opened in 2002.
