About Fitzroy
Fitzroy's main growth came between the 1860s and the 1880s, when flour mills, footwear works, a brewery and the MacRobertson confectionery factory of 1880 drew people in. The census counted 11,807 in 1861 and 32,543 in 1891. Three tramlines opened on Nicholson, Brunswick and Smith Streets in 1886-87 and Smith Street took over as the shopping strip. Royal Terrace on Nicholson Street dates from 1853-58, the Devonshire Arms Hotel from 1843. From the 1980s the factory sites turned into apartments.
The street plan is a tight rectangular grid of medium-sized streets with narrow back lanes carrying one-way traffic, and that is the practical fact for anyone bringing a mower in. Accounts differ on whether the ground is flat or elevated, but it falls away east of Smith Street toward Collingwood. The one big green space is Edinburgh Gardens, 24 hectares on the Fitzroy North edge, temporarily gazetted in March 1862 and permanently reserved on 24 October 1881, with elm avenues from the 1880s and an 1888 grandstand on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Fitzroy is City of Yarra. The council relies on the established expectation that residents mow the nature strip outside their property and keep it from becoming a trip or fire hazard, and it looks after the street trees itself. Since the week of 1 July 2024 food and garden waste has gone in the lime-green-lid FOGO bin, collected weekly with the red-lid rubbish bin. The suburb is named after Sir Charles FitzRoy, Governor of New South Wales from 1846 to 1855.
