About Abbotsford
The Convent of the Good Shepherd went up on the river in 1864 and the precinct joined the National Heritage List in 2017. Victoria Park was laid out in 1879 and was Collingwood Football Club's home from 1892 to 2005. The Heidelberg railway arrived in 1888, the Princes Bridge line in 1901, the primary school in 1899 and the brewery in 1904, taken over by CUB in 1909. An Abbotsford township had been promoted at auction on the riverbank in the 1850s, with the low Collingwood floodplain to its west. The Eastern Freeway's northern section was cut through in the 1960s.
Merri Creek meets the Yarra at Dights Falls. Flooding from the river was a regular event until Melbourne's sewerage systems were built. Collingwood Children's Farm has worked the river flats since 1979. The streets are narrow and one-way, with laneways behind them and few detached houses. Whatever grass you have, say what it is.
