About Collingwood
The gold rushes filled the place. Between 1871 and 1891 the population nearly doubled to about 35,000 and then held; by 2011 it was 6,467. Smith Street beat Wellington Street as the retail thoroughfare in the 1870s and got its tram in 1887. The Yarra drew mills, wool washing and breweries, one of them opened in 1888, the Yorkshire Brewery another. Housing Commission estates went up from 1958, the twenty-storey blocks between 1967 and 1971. Nineteenth-century factories and houses survive along Oxford and Cambridge Streets.
The ground east of Smith Street is the Collingwood flat: a plain starting about 200 metres from the strip, easy to subdivide and prone to flooding because stormwater ran off an impervious subsoil. The rest is mostly flat, apart from a prominent slope rising from Hoddle Street up to Smith Street. The suburb runs from Smith Street to Hoddle Street and from Alexandra Parade to Victoria Parade.
The council is City of Yarra, which expects residents to mow and maintain the nature strip abutting their property and keeps the street trees for itself under its Street Tree Policy. Food and garden waste has gone in the lime-green-lid FOGO bin, collected weekly with the rubbish, since the week of 1 July 2024. The recorded Wurundjeri name is Yalla-birr-ang. The English one, given in 1842, is for Admiral Lord Collingwood of Trafalgar, or possibly for a hotel that carried his name.
