About Port Melbourne
The name Sandridge came from the line of dunes along the foreshore, and a long shallow lagoon, probably an old course of the Yarra, separated the town from Albert Park until infilling finished in 1929. Growth came in bursts. Population rose 60% in the 1880s and peaked at 14,205 in 1947 before falling to 7,496 by 1991. Station Pier, rebuilt by 1930, was the postwar migrant entry point. The suburb has frontage to Hobsons Bay and the lower Yarra, with Sandridge Beach on the bay. Fishermans Bend was dug for building sand and then set aside for industry, with 24 hectares reserved for GM-Holden in 1935.
Garden City is the State Savings Bank estate. The bank began it near Graham Street primary school in 1926 and built it through the 1930s, with Housing Commission housing after; Melbourne's earliest planned nature strips were probably laid here. The 1950s brought Housing Commission flats on Nott and Princess Streets. Beacon Cove went on former industrial land north of the piers, launched in 1987 and built from 1996. The ground under the Yarra delta is the Port Melbourne Sand and the Fishermans Bend Silt.
The council is City of Port Phillip, with the City of Melbourne taking the Fishermans Bend part. Port Phillip leaves the strip's mowing and weeding to the owner or occupant and keeps the street trees for itself; it steps in only when a strip becomes a public health risk, and prefers mediation before orders under Local Law No 1 of 2013.
