Lawn mowing in Yarraville

Yarraville was named and sold as an estate in 1859, the year the Footscray-Williamstown railway opened through it, and got a stopping place on that line in 1871. The 1893 station rebuild pulled the shops across to Anderson Street, where the Sun Theatre went up in 1935.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Yarraville lawn

  • Five or more units on the block? No council green bin yet, so say whether the mower should take the clippings away.
  • The street tree on your strip belongs to the council. Ask for the grass trimmed around its base and nothing cut off the tree.
  • If the back lawn holds water after rain, say so. The mower can pick a dry day rather than rut it.

Yarraville lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Yarraville?+

Our model prices a 180 m² Yarraville lawn at $105-$155 per visit. A front and back lawn on a standard block sits inside that; adding the nature strip lifts it a little.

Who mows the nature strip in Yarraville?+

You do. Maribyrnong council expects the resident to mow and weed it, trim the edges and pick up litter, while the council looks after the street tree. Put the strip on your listing and it goes in the same visit.

Can lawn clippings go in Yarraville's green bin?+

Yes, if you have one. Maribyrnong's green-lid bin takes food and garden organics fortnightly, 240 L as standard, and comes with the rates for houses and blocks of up to four units. Larger unit buildings don't have it yet.

About Yarraville

Industry came in the 1870s. Joshua Bros opened a sugar works in 1873 (Victoria Sugar Co from 1875) and James Cuming an acid works in 1875, later the Cuming Smith fertiliser plant, with box, chemical, cotton and jute works alongside. The schools trace the growth: a Common School in 1875, Yarraville West primary in 1887, Kingsville primary in 1919 and Wembley primary in 1958. Building across the 5.7 square kilometres was fastest from the 1950s, when a sustained wave of migration drove it.

Yarraville sits on basalt, and bluestone was quarried here. Basalt country carries a clay that holds water in winter and cracks in summer, so say what your lawn does after rain. Water bounds two sides. The Maribyrnong and the Yarra meet at the suburb's eastern edge, and Stony Creek runs past Yarraville Gardens (improved in 1913), Beaton Reserve and the Westgate Golf Course. The West Gate Freeway closes the southern side.

Maribyrnong City Council leaves the nature strip to the resident and keeps the street trees for itself; you can't plant or remove one. A planted strip needs a free permit and its plants stay under 80 cm under the August 2025 guidelines. Garden waste goes in the green-lid food and organics bin, collected fortnightly on the alternate week to recycling. The standard bin is 240 L, a 120 L on request, and the charge sits inside the rates. Houses and developments of up to four units get the bin. Buildings of five or more units are not yet served.
