Lawn mowing in Newport

Newport was the railway junction for Geelong and Williamstown by 1861, went by Williamstown Junction from about 1862, and took its present name in 1881. The workshops built in the mid-1880s ran for 106 years, and the Newport Power Station of 1912 was supplying 68% of Victoria's electricity by 1923-24.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Newport lawn

  • On the standard 120 L bin, ask for the clippings mulched back in through spring so the bin isn't full by the second cut.
  • Say if the strip has a lifted path edge or a bare patch. The council won't fix it, and a mower needs to know where to trim by hand.
  • In summer ask for a higher cut and never more than a third of the leaf off at once. Dry clay is hard on a scalped lawn.

Newport lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Newport?+

For a 180 m² Newport lawn the model gives $105-$150 per visit. A lawn front and back sits in that band; a unit courtyard quotes well under.

Does Hobsons Bay mow my nature strip?+

No. Hobsons Bay residents maintain the strip beside their property and keep it free of trip hazards, and the council does no maintenance or reinstatement at all. List the strip with the lawn and it gets done together.

Which green bin size do Newport houses get?+

A 120 L light-green-lid bin as standard, collected fortnightly for food and garden waste. A 240 L bin is available for an added annual charge.

About Newport

Before the railway there was a ferry to Melbourne from The Strand and a common school from 1856, replaced by a State primary in 1886. The Catholic primary opened in 1901, Baptist and Anglican churches followed in 1913-14, and Newport West primary opened in 1952. Population went from 2,478 in 1911 to 10,431 in 2001. The workshops closed in 1992. The 1915 electrical substation reopened as The Substation arts venue in 2008.

Newport is basalt land with quarries, and Newport Lakes is one of those quarries turned into parkland. The clay that sits on basalt is wet in winter and hard in summer, and a lawn on it is easier to cut on a dry day. Greenwich Bay and the Sandy Point Conservation Area are on the river side of the suburb, and a second line, to Sunshine, opened in 1887.

Hobsons Bay puts the nature strip on the resident. Keep it maintained and free of trip hazards, because the council does no maintenance on strips and will not reinstate grass. The light-green-lid food and garden bin comes fortnightly. The standard size is 120 L; a 240 L costs an added annual charge.
