About Prahran
The cable trams made the suburb. Toorak Road got one in 1888 and Chapel Street in 1891, and the shopping strips grew out from them: population rose 50% in the 1870s and doubled in the 1880s to nearly 40,000 by 1890. By 1927 the municipality ran five electric routes, on High Street (1910), Dandenong Road (1911), Malvern Road (1915), Chapel Street (1926) and Toorak Road (1927). Chapel Street's centre took shape between the 1890s and the 1930s, and the municipality peaked at 59,882 people in 1947. Housing Commission estates and private flats came in the 1960s. Older houses were restored from the 1970s, and the 1990s brought a medium-density boom.
Victoria Gardens was designed by William Sangster in 1885. The first state school opened at Hawksburn in 1875, the same year as the market. The name is Hoddle's 1840 rendering of 'purraran', recorded as meaning almost surrounded by water, though recent scholarship reads it as a transcription of Birrarung, the Boonwurrung name for the Yarra. The Horace Petty estates on Malvern Road are across the line in South Yarra.
