Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Malvern lawn
- If the block has a front lawn, a back lawn and a strip, list all of them or say which you want cut.
- Backing onto Gardiners Creek? Say so, and whether the bottom of the block holds water after rain.
- FOGO comes fortnightly here, 120 L. If the bin is already full from the garden, ask the mower to take the clippings.
Malvern lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Malvern?+
The model puts a 180 m² Malvern lawn at around $115-$160 each time. A bigger lawn is quoted on its measured area and comes in over; a unit's patch comes in under.
Who cuts the grass on the nature strip in Malvern?+
The owner and occupier. Stonnington's Nature Strip Planting Policy says the strips are council land maintained by residents under the General Local Law 2018, and that law's untidy-premises clause caps grass on any land, strips included, at 30 cm. The council plants and maintains the street trees, and you can't plant your own.
Does a bigger FOGO bin cost more in Stonnington?+
Yes. The 120 L bin at a standalone home is $89 a year and the shared 240 L bin for apartments and units is $127; both are mandatory for council-serviced properties.
About Malvern
The 1880s made Malvern a residential district of fine residences on generous allotments. Malvern station opened on the Glenferrie Road line in 1880, and the Burnley-Darling line of 1890 follows the south side of Gardiners Creek. The shire hall of 1886, Second Empire in style, later became the town hall. The Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust, formed in 1908, electrified High Street in 1910-14, Glenferrie Road in 1910-13, Wattletree Road in 1910-12 and Malvern Road in 1915. Population went from 449 in 1871 to 5,085 in 1891.
Gardiners Creek is the northern boundary. Malvern Gardens on Spring Road has a fountain built on the site of a natural spring, and Central Park was John Landy's training ground. The Kulin word for the area, Koornang, means rising ground. The English name comes from Skinner's family link to Ledbury near Malvern Hill in Herefordshire, and the post office on Glenferrie Road, opened 1860, became Malvern North in 1892 when a new one opened near Wattletree Road.
Stonnington is the council. Under its General Local Law 2018 the nature strip is council land that the owner and occupier maintain, with grass kept under 30 cm, alive or dead; planting it needs a permit, and the street trees are planted and pruned by the council. Standalone homes have a 120 L green-lid FOGO bin, $89 a year, emptied fortnightly on the alternate week to recycling, with garbage weekly. Garden waste goes in it with the food scraps.
