Lawn mowing in Toorak

Toorak sits on a rise on the south side of a bend in the Yarra River, between Williams Road, Malvern Road, Glenferrie Road and the water. The name is from Toorak House, the Italianate residence James Jackson built in 1849 and the Governor's residence from 1854.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Toorak lawn

  • A lawn on the slope toward the river is cut across the fall, so the direction it drops is planned for before the visit.
  • For the front lawn a flat block shares, name who is paying, and say whether the body corporate has a bin; Stonnington's is 120 L, fortnightly.
  • An interwar lot cut from an estate can have a long narrow side path. Give the width, since under 70 cm only a push mower goes through.

Toorak lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Toorak?+

The model's Toorak figure sits at $115-$165 once the lawn is 180 m². What the mower bids follows the outline of your block on the aerial, so a subdivided estate lot with lawn on the slope quotes above it and a flat's front strip well under.

Who keeps the nature strip in Toorak?+

The resident. The land is the council's and the upkeep is the resident's under the council's General Local Law 2018, which has the owner and occupier keeping it from becoming unsightly, with grass under 30 cm. The council does the planting and pruning of street trees. If you want the strip cut with the lawn, tick it on the listing.

My lawn slopes toward the river. Is that a problem for a mower?+

Not a problem, a detail. Toorak is on a rise above the Yarra bend; the mower wants to know the direction of the fall and whether there are steps or terraces. Put it on the listing with a photo taken from the low end.

About Toorak

The 1880s land boom put many large mansions on the rise, often Italianate, and the depression of the 1890s forced many of their owners to sell. The interwar houses came in Tudor Revival and Moderne, the estates were subdivided through the Depression, and by the late 1930s flats equalled houses. After the Second World War the bigger mansions were demolished for flats, townhouses and apartments, with high-rise from the 1970s. By 2011 separate houses were 34.7% of dwellings, row houses 15.9% and flats and units 49.3%. A house lot on a slice of an old estate and the grass shared by a block of flats are different listings; say which yours is, and whether it sits on the slope.

The rise is the one fact about the ground. Toorak is at about 32 m with the river bend below it, 4.3 km² between the four boundaries. Toorak Road has carried a tram since 1888 and route 58 still does, with 72 on Malvern Road and Heyington station on the Glen Waverley line. St John's Anglican dates from 1862 and the Toorak Central School from 1890; Glamorgan, St Catherine's and Loreto Mandeville Hall all opened in the early 1920s. Say which way the lawn falls, whether the front is terraced above the street, and how a mower gets from the gate to the back; on a subdivided estate the side access is the whole question.

Toorak is City of Stonnington. Under its General Local Law 2018 an unsightly strip is the owner's and occupier's problem, and grass over 30 cm, alive or dead, counts as unsightly. The land is the council's, the maintenance is the resident's, planting needs a permit, and tree planting and pruning stays with the council. The green-lid FOGO bin for a standalone home is 120 L at $89 a year, emptied fortnightly alternating with recycling, garbage every week. A flat block's bins may be arranged differently, so say what you have.
