Lawn mowing in Bulleen
Bulleen was bounded by watercourses with only two bridges over them, and it stayed a dairying district into the 1930s. Residential subdivision began in the 1950s and the big expansion came in the 1980s.

Claim a founding seatBefore you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Bulleen lawn
- The river side of the suburb is billabong country, so toward the Yarra flats a back lawn that sits wet after rain needs a mention.
- Manningham empties the green bin every week, so tick clippings to the bin unless you want them mulched back in.
- Put the side gate width on the listing. Below 70 cm only a push mower goes through; the wide machine wants 95 cm.
Bulleen lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Bulleen?+
The Bulleen guide comes to $110-$155 for one mow of a 180 m² lawn. Mowers quote from the lawn area traced on your aerial, so a block on the flats with grass at both ends prices above that and a courtyard well under.
Do I have to mow the nature strip in Bulleen?+
The council expects you to. Manningham's Nature Strip Guide 2023 leans on an established community expectation, its phrase, that the owner or resident keeps the strip mown, weeded, clear of litter and level, and the council does no proactive maintenance itself; the trees on the strip are the council's. List the strip too, and one visit covers it and the front lawn.
Is Bulleen flat?+
The histories give a height and the river flats, not a contour. The suburb sits about 55 m above sea level between the Yarra on the north and Koonung Creek on the south, and the land along the river is billabong flood plain, with Bolin the largest of the lakes. How your own lawn holds water is a line for the listing, not a guess from the map.
About Bulleen
Frederic Unwin bought 5,120 acres here in 1841 at one pound an acre under the Special Survey regulations, and the land went to dairying and cereals, with substantial homesteads on the holdings. Dairying predominated from the 1900s to the 1930s, and through the Second World War the district grew vegetables for the armed forces. Houses came late because the river and the creek, with only two bridges over them, kept the place cut off. The first post office opened on 1 April 1952, the primary school in 1957 and the Catholic primary in 1963, and Bulleen Plaza went up as a drive-in shopping centre in 1974. The 1980s filled in the rest. Buses are the only public transport; the Doncaster railway planned along the freeway was abandoned in the 1980s.
The Yarra curves around the northern boundary opposite Heidelberg, and the river side is billabong flood plain. The billabongs were Wurundjeri country for about 5,000 years, and Bolin, the largest of the lakes, was a ritual meeting place. Koonung Creek is the southern border. Between the two the suburb sits about 55 m up, with Yarra Flats Park and its bike and walking tracks along the river, Banksia Park beside Heide, and neighbourhood reserves such as Koonung Park and Yarraleen inside the streets. A flood plain is a fact about the river flats, not about your block. Tell the mower what your own back lawn does after a week of rain, and which way it falls.
The council is Manningham. Its Nature Strip Guide 2023 says there is no renovation or proactive maintenance of nature strips by the council, which relies instead on the community's established expectation that mowing, weeding, litter collection and levelling are done by the owner or resident; every tree on the strip belongs to the council for the life of the tree. Approved plantings stay under 500 mm, or 300 mm near an intersection. Food and garden waste goes to the green-lid bin, weekly since 3 July 2023, and garbage and recycling take alternate fortnights, so a spring cut never waits two weeks for a bin.
