Eaglemont is the ridge and hilltops around the Mount Eagle Estate, 53 m up on average, with the Yarra to the south-east and Darebin Creek to the west. Walter Burley Griffin, with Marion Mahony Griffin, laid out the curving streets of two of its estates in 1915 and 1916.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Eaglemont lawn

  • Under mature trees, ask for the leaves blown off before the cut from April to June; mulching wet leaf into the grass smothers it.
  • A ridge block falls somewhere; say whether the lawn steps down from the street or from the house, and how the mower reaches each level.
  • Curved streets mean odd-shaped lawns, so give the shape in a sentence and let the aerial trace do the measuring.

Eaglemont lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Eaglemont?+

Eaglemont's medium-lawn guide stands at $110-$160. A Griffin-estate block on a curved, sloping street with big trees over the lawn tends to price above it, for the blow-down and the edges more than the mowing.

Does Banyule collect garden waste in Eaglemont?+

Every week, since 4 July 2022, in the food and garden bin. Clippings and the leaf from the old gardens are gone within days rather than a fortnight; pick the bin as the clippings' destination when you list. The strip out the front stays yours to keep neat and tidy.

Is a Griffin-estate block harder to mow?+

It can be. The 1915 and 1916 subdivisions ran the streets with the contours and kept shared green space, so a lawn can be wedge-shaped, on a slope, and open to a reserve along one side. A mower copes with all of it; what changes is the trimming time, and a clear description keeps the bid honest.

About Eaglemont

Thomas Walker took the Mount Eagle Crown grant in 1838, the Bolden brothers' Leighton and S.J. Browne's Hartlands followed in the 1840s, and J.H. Brooke built the Mount Eagle house in the late 1850s. The land boom of the 1880s cut Mount Eagle and Leighton into the Mount Eagle Estate, and in 1888 the property was opened to the painters who became the Heidelberg School. Harold Annear's three houses at The Eyrie went up in 1902-03. Only 26 people were counted here in 1921; the station on Sherwood Road opened on 1 May 1926, the village on Silverdale Road was built in 1927-28, and by 2001 there were 3,447 people.

The Griffins' Mount Eagle Estate subdivision of 1915 ran its streets in curves that follow the land and set aside communal green spaces; the Glenard Estate on Glenard Drive did the same in 1916. The Ivanhoe Views Estate came between the wars in English Domestic Revival, Spanish Mission and California Bungalow. The suburb is described as one of many trees and mature gardens. Under trees like that, leaf on the lawn gets blown clear before mowing, and the paths get the same. If your lawn meets one of the shared green spaces, say whether there is a fence between.

Banyule's strip rule applies here as everywhere in the city, neat and tidy at the resident's hand, with council crews cutting a hazard and nothing else. A weekly food and garden collection has run since 4 July 2022 and takes the autumn leaf on top of the clippings. There is no school in the suburb; Yarra Flats Park lies to the south-east.
