Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Heidelberg lawn
- Say whether the back yard is reachable with a mower and how steep it is. A drop to the valley is a different job from a flat rectangle.
- Hospital-precinct townhouses: a courtyard plus the nature strip is a normal listing here.
- Shaded valley lawns: high cut, never scalped, especially in summer.
Heidelberg lawn mowing questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Heidelberg?+
Somewhere around $105-$155 a cut for 180 m² of lawn. If the block is on the valley slope with a drop toward the Yarra, expect the top of the range for the trimmer work; a small flat lawn near Burgundy Street sits at the bottom.
Whose job is the nature strip in Heidelberg?+
The resident's. Banyule expects the strip in front kept neat and tidy and mows only where it has become a hazard. List it with the lawn and it is cut on the same visit.
Does Banyule take garden waste?+
Weekly, in the FOGO bin, since 4 July 2022. Clippings and the leaf drop from the valley trees both go in it, so there is nothing to cart away after a Heidelberg mow.
About Heidelberg
Most of Heidelberg's housing went up after the war and through the 1970s on the slopes above the river, so the standard block here is a sloping one: a front lawn that runs down to the footpath, a nature strip, and a back yard that either climbs or falls toward the valley. The blocks near Burgundy Street and Warringal are flatter and more built-up, with townhouse courtyards; the streets toward Rosanna and Viewbank are bigger and greener.
The valley soils drain well and the tree cover is heavy, so buffalo and shade lawns are common and couch is patchy under the canopy. Leaf drop from the river-valley gums is constant, and a visit that ends with the paths blown clean is the one worth paying for. Slope decides most Heidelberg quotes: a terraced lawn with a retaining wall is trimmer work along every edge.
City of Banyule: weekly food-and-garden collection, and residents keep their nature strip mown. The Town Hall dates from 1937 and Warringal shopping centre from 1987; the Main Yarra Trail runs along the river below. The station is on the Hurstbridge line and the Austin means there are always tradies in the area, but a lot of the suburb's streets are narrow and steep and parking a trailer is a skill.
