Lawn mowing in Templestowe Lower

The first Templestowe village of 1852 stood here, west of Ruffey Creek between Finns Reserve and Foote Street. The district kept its rural quiet until the 1960s because it was remote from public transport, and the streets that followed were laid out for the motor car.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a Templestowe Lower lawn

  • Strip and front lawn as one job, or the lawn alone? The streets here were laid out in the era of the motor car, so add where the mower can park.
  • Near Ruffey Creek or the Birrarung Park end, a back lawn that holds water after rain needs saying; it changes the machine.
  • Manningham's green bin goes out weekly. Tick clippings to the bin when you list, or ask for them mulched in.

Templestowe Lower lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in Templestowe Lower?+

Templestowe Lower's guide figure, $110-$155, is for a 180 m² lawn. The quote is built from the grass traced on your own aerial, so a house with grass at the front and more at the back can measure past that.

What does Manningham expect of the nature strip in Templestowe Lower?+

Mowing, weeding, litter pick-up and a level surface, all by the owner or resident. The Nature Strip Guide 2023 says renovation and proactive maintenance are not things the council does on strips; it arranges work only for a traffic or safety hazard or a significant amenity problem, and it owns every tree on the strip for the life of the tree. Keep it as grass and nothing else is needed.

My lawn runs down to the Yarra parkland. What should I say?+

Say what the boundary is. Linear parkland follows the river, Birrarung Park has a billabong and Finns Reserve has river access, and a lawn that meets any of them is edged against open ground rather than a fence. Say whether the rear boundary is fenced, whether the lawn falls toward the river, and what comes over from the parkland; the mower prices the edge as well as the grass.

About Templestowe Lower

Templestowe Lower was part of Frederic Unwin's Special Survey of 1841, 5,120 acres bought at one pound an acre. Finns Upper Yarra hotel stood by the old village, and a Lower Templestowe post office ran from about 1902 to 1973. Growth came with the schools. A high school opened in 1961, Templestowe Valley and Templestowe Heights primaries between 1966 and 1970 and a technical school in 1971; St Kevin's and Templestowe College serve it now. There is no train or tram; the buses run on Thompsons, Manningham and Williamsons roads. Shops gathered at Macedon Square and Macedon Plaza and on Manningham Road, and the Templestowe Hotel is here despite its name.

The Yarra is the northern boundary, downstream from Templestowe, with linear parkland along it. Birrarung Park has a billabong and Finns Reserve has river access, and both have walking tracks. The other edges are Rose Avenue, Russell Street and Sheahans Road on the west, Ruffey Creek and Williamsons Road on the east and Manningham Road on the south. How the land falls between the river and Manningham Road is for the listing to say: whether the lawn is on one level, whether the back of the block runs down toward the river or the creek, and how wide the side gate is.

Manningham is the council, and its position on the nature strip is that the household looks after it. The Nature Strip Guide 2023 puts it as an established community expectation that property owners or residents do the mowing, the weeding, the litter collection and the levelling, with no renovation or proactive maintenance from the council, which owns every tree on the strip for the tree's life. Plantings need approval and stay under 500 mm. The green-lid FOGO bin went weekly on 3 July 2023; garbage and recycling alternate fortnightly.
