About Hurstbridge
Cornelius Haley grazed the land from 1842 and the place was Upper Diamond Creek, or Allwood after his homestead. Henry Hurst built the first log bridge over the creek in 1858 and was fatally wounded by the bushranger Robert Bourke in 1866; a reinforced-concrete bridge replaced the crossing during the First World War, and Hurst's Bridge became one word in 1924. The primary school opened in 1916, burned in 2003 and was rebuilt in 2005. Trains were electric from 1926 and the town got electricity in 1957. Population was 824 in 1954, 1,021 in 1976 and 2,350 by 1981.
Orchards and nurseries were the trade for decades, and Ferguson's Paddock, with Allwood House in it, is the larger parkland now. Two native flora reserves lie inside the boundary, and Albert Tucker painted the surrounding bushland from a 5-acre property he took in the 1960s. The suburb runs to 14.8 km², far beyond the township, so a Hurstbridge block can be a town lawn near the station or a paddock with a house on it. The Wattle Festival is the last Sunday in August, and the Diamond Creek Trail reached the town in 2022. Which sort of block yours is, and how long the grass has been left, is the first thing to list.
