Lawn mowing in St Helena

Major Anthony Beale took up a pastoral lease on the Plenty River in 1841 and named his farm after the Atlantic island where he had been paymaster. The district kept the name, and the houses came a long time later: major residential development began in the mid to late 1980s.

Before you list: three things worth telling a mower about a St Helena lawn

  • A 1980s block with a retaining wall is edged by hand along the top, so a lawn that steps down from the house is a different job from one on the level.
  • Measure the side gate in centimetres. Between 70 and 95 cm is the standard machine; wider takes the big mower.
  • If a football-ground fence or the reserve is your back boundary, say so, and say what blows across it.

St Helena lawn mowing questions

How much does lawn mowing cost in St Helena?+

St Helena's medium-lawn figure runs to $100-$145 for a single visit. The bids you see are built on the measured lawn of your own block rather than a suburb figure, so a bigger lawn quotes higher and a smaller one lower.

Do I look after the nature strip in St Helena?+

You do. A neat and tidy strip is the resident's job under Banyule's rule, and the council intervenes only for a hazard. The secondary college and Glen Katherine primary sit across the boundary in Eltham North, so if your street is near the line, check the rates notice before you list. Tick the nature strip and the mower prices it in.

My St Helena lawn steps down behind a retaining wall. Does that change the bid?+

It does. The top edge of a wall is trimmed by hand, a lawn split by steps counts as two lawns, not one, and the steps rule out the wide mower. Say how many levels there are and how the mower gets from one to the next, and the bid will cover the trimming and the cut both.

About St Helena

Beale farmed his lease until he died in 1865. He built a chapel in his garden in memory of his wife Katherine Rose, and the chapel and three acres went to the Church of England as St Katherine's; the dates given for it disagree, so none is given here. The building burned in the bushfire of 1957 and was rebuilt from the architectural drawings. Chapel and graveyard now stand in Anthony Beale Reserve, where the Greensborough Junior Football Club plays. The suburb sits between Greensborough and Diamond Creek, 21 km from the city.

The houses are much younger than the chapel. Major residential development began in the mid to late 1980s; St Helena Secondary College opened in 1984 and Glen Katherine primary in 1986, both just over the line in Eltham North. Holy Trinity primary and a Montessori school serve the suburb too, and St Helena Marketplace is the shopping centre. What your lawn does in a wet August and a dry February is the useful line.

Banyule is the council. Strip upkeep sits with the resident, neat and tidy being the standard, and council mowers come out only for a hazard. Garden and food waste is collected every week, a service running since 4 July 2022, so a mower can bin the clippings and the bin is empty again inside seven days. If a tree on the strip drops on the front lawn, or the strip itself is planted rather than grassed, the listing is the place for it.
