Greensborough is where the flat-block assumptions stop working. Greensborough lawns slope, they sit under gums, they end at a retaining wall or a bush edge, and a good share of them are big. The 1950s-70s houses on the ridges have front lawns that fall toward the street and back yards that drop toward a creek line; the newer pockets near the Plaza are tighter and flatter. Mowers here carry a line trimmer as a matter of course and quote on slope and access as much as area.

The soil drains well and the shade is heavy, so buffalo and fescue lawns are as common as couch and kikuyu. Leaf and bark drop from the eucalypts is constant, and the blow-down at the end of a visit is a real part of the job. Along the Plenty River the blocks back onto parkland and get kangaroos on the lawn; on the green-wedge edge the rear of a block may be more bush than grass.

Greensborough is City of Banyule with a Nillumbik portion. Banyule collects food and garden waste weekly and expects residents to keep their nature strip mown. On the Nillumbik side, residents may mow exotic-grass nature strips in kerbed streets and clear fine fuels - dry grass, leaves, bark - from the road reserve for fire safety, and must leave indigenous vegetation alone. Greensborough Plaza opened in 1976; WaterMarc, the Diamond Valley Library and the station on the Hurstbridge line are the other landmarks.
